Planning a trip to Costa Rica for the first time? You're in the right place. This 7-day Costa Rica itinerary is designed specifically for first time visitors who want to experience the best of the coutnry without feeling rushed. If you love a mix of adventure and relaxation, this itinerary strikes the perfect balance while keeping travel days manageable.
This 7-day Costa Rica itinerary starts and ends at Liberia International Airport (LIR) and takes you through two of the country’s most iconic regions: La Fortuna in Alajuela Province and the beaches of Guanacaste. Over one unforgettable week, you’ll visit highlights like Arenal Volcano, Rio Celeste, hot springs in La Fortuna, coffee tasting experiences, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, including Playa Flamingo and Playa Conchal. While you won’t see everything in seven days, this itinerary allows you to see and do a lot at a comfortable pace—making it an ideal first-time Costa Rica itinerary.
How to get around in Costa Rica for 7 days
You will need a rental car for this itinerary and I recommend Vamos Rent-A-Car as that is the one we personally went with and had a great experience with. Check out this post for more detailed information about renting a car in Costa Rica.
This 7-day Costa Rica itinerary route is designed to minimize drive time, allowing you to spend more time exploring and less time in the car. The total driving time for this route—from Liberia International Airport (LIR) to Tenorio/Rio Celeste, La Fortuna, Playa Flamingo, and back to LIR—is approximately 6.5 hours.
Starting and ending at LIR Airport, this route offers one of the most efficient driving loops for first-time visitors to Costa Rica. Below is the exact Costa Rica road trip route, optimized for shorter drives and a more relaxed travel pace.
Best Places to Stay near La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Since you’ll be staying in La Fortuna, Costa Rica for the first half of this itinerary, I’ve put together a list of some of the best places to stay in La Fortuna for every budget and travel style. La Fortuna is one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica, and hotels and resorts fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons. To secure the best location, availability, and prices, I highly recommend booking your La Fortuna accommodation as early as possible.
Sangregado Lodge ($$) This is where we stayed and I absolutely loved it here. It offers jaw dropping views of Arenal right from your room. Sangregado lodge is steps from Mistico Arenal hanging bridges (making it very easy to go here as early as possible).
